Melanie Martinez is an American singer-songwriter known for pop with a dark yet playful edge. While I’m still getting familiar with Martinez’s music, a few songs have stuck out to me as true greats that I keep replaying. I’m going to share them with you in hopes that you will become as curious about Martinez’s repertoire as I have.

1. “Dollhouse”

This is a gritty and amazingly funky song from Melanie Martinez. The double or triple meaning of its lyrics makes for an interesting listen, and the unique sound will keep you hitting replay for months. It reminds me of MIKA in some ways but is totally new in others.

2. “Soap”

“Soap” is a lot of fun. The play on words throughout makes it a joy to listen to from start to finish. Furthermore, its light poppy sound is enjoyable no matter where or when you listen.

3. “Pity Party”

“It’s My Party” is one of my favorite “oldies,” and Martinez’s fun and dance-worthy “Pity Party” interpolates the chorus for a one-of-a-kind yet nostalgic sound. This is a must-listen for fans of the Leslie Gore hit.

4. “Bombs on Monday Morning”

I normally don’t review unreleased songs, as I know many artists don’t want them shared. That being said, “Bombs on Monday Morning” has been so widely shared on TikTok (“Pinky promise, I’ll still love your garden,” for those who didn’t know the title) and YouTube that I felt that it wouldn’t be harmful for me to share my thoughts on it here. I consider this to be the best Melanie Martinez song of all time, and it’s a shame there has been no official release. Words don’t do it justice; please just give it a listen.

5. Mrs. Potato Head

Unless you get easily offended by tracks that criticize the excessive cosmetic surgery focus of U.S. culture, this is a fantastic track to sink your teeth into. Martinez reminds us that there is a price to pay for sacrificing everything in the name of beauty.
